The most important thing about cetirizine – briefly explained
- Cetirizine is considered a highly effective and well-tolerated remedy for allergies (anti-allergic) such as hay fever and hives.
- It relieves symptoms such as itching, runny nose and skin reactions.
- Cetirizine has a rapid and long-lasting effect.
- Cetirizine is not a “cortisone” and therefore does not cause any cortisone-related side effects. It usually doesn't make you tired at all.
-
How does cetirizine work?
-
Cetirizine is a so-called H1 antihistamine. Antihistamines are drugs that inhibit the effects of histamine in the body by blocking histamine docking sites (receptors). Four different types of receptors are now known, with cetirizine specifically inhibiting histamine-1 receptors.
Histamine is a substance produced by the body that is released, among other things, in the event of an allergy and can lead to the formation of edema (accumulation of water in the tissue), redness, itching and swelling. Taking cetirizine can reduce an allergic reaction and relieve itching and hives.
What should you pay attention to when using it?
Film-coated tablets with a dosage of ten milligrams are available for adults and children aged six and over. Cetirizine juice can be taken by adults or children aged two and over. If your child is under six years old, you should not give them any tablets, as children of this age have difficulty swallowing tablets. A juice makes it easier to take. Cetirizine works fairly quickly, within 10 to 30 minutes. It also has a long duration of action of 24 hours, so a single application, preferably in the evening, is usually sufficient. You can take cetirizine with or without food, but with a glass of water and without chewing.
Cetirizine can be taken throughout pregnancy. Studies have shown that there is no harm to the unborn child. Cetirizine is also allowed during breastfeeding.
