Nasal spray without preservatives
Preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride are commonly used in nasal sprays, although they can cause significant damage to the sensitive lining of the nose.
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® is a remedy for use in the nose (rhinological agent) and contains the alpha sympathomimetic xylometazoline.
Xylometazoline has vasoconstrictive properties and thereby causes a decongestion of the mucous membrane.
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® is applied
- to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa (short-term treatment) for colds, runny colds that occur in attacks (vasomotor rhinitis) or allergic colds (allergic rhinitis)
- to facilitate the drainage of secretions in the case of inflammation of the paranasal sinuses and catarrh of the tube middle ear in connection with a cold.
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® is intended for adults and school children
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® must not be applied
- if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you suffer from a certain form of chronic cold (rhinitis sicca, dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa with crusting).
- after surgical removal of the pituitary gland through the nose (transsphenoidal hypophysectomy) or other surgical procedures that expose the meninges.
- in infants, toddlers and children under 6 years of age.
Warnings and Precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® apply:
- if you are being treated with certain mood-elevating medicines (monoamine oxidase inhibitors [MAOIs]) and other medicines that can potentially increase blood pressure.
- if you suffer from increased pressure in the eye, especially angle-closure glaucoma.
- if you have a heart condition (e.g. long QT syndrome).
- if you suffer from severe cardiovascular diseases (e.g. coronary artery disease [CHD], high blood pressure).
- if you suffer from a tumor of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma).
- if you have metabolic disorders such as B. hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism) or diabetes (diabetes mellitus).
- if you have an enlarged prostate.
- if you suffer from the metabolic disease porphyria.
The long-term use of cold medicines that reduce swelling of the mucous membrane can lead to chronic swelling and ultimately to atrophy of the nasal mucosa.
Children
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® must not be used in children under 6 years of age.
Use of Nasal Spray-ratiopharm ® together with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
With the simultaneous use of Nasal Spray-ratiopharm ® and certain mood-enhancing medicines (MAO inhibitors of the tranylcypromine type or tricyclic antidepressants) as well as medicines that increase blood pressure can cause an increase in blood pressure due to effects on heart and circulatory functions.
pregnancy and breast feeding period
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
The recommended dosage must not be exceeded during pregnancy and lactation, as an overdose can impair the blood supply to the unborn child or reduce milk production.
pregnancy
Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® can be used during pregnancy for no more than one week when used as directed.
lactation
It is not known whether xylometazoline is excreted in human milk. A risk for the infant cannot be excluded. A decision must be made as to whether to discontinue breastfeeding or to continue treatment Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® should be avoided/treatment with Nasal Spray ratiopharm ® is to be interrupted. Both the benefit of breastfeeding for the child and the benefit of therapy for the woman must be taken into account.
Ability to drive and use machines
If used as intended, no impairments are to be expected.
